The most popular procedure in my office is the “Diamond Contour™.” It is a technique I created to evaluate a patient’s face in its entirety, and customize a combination of anti-aging treatments to help recreate their ‘Diamond of Youth.’ I created this technique to better educate my patients that the shape of our face changes as we age due to bone, fat and collagen loss. In order to achieve a natural, effortless look of youth, you have to address both the texture of the skin and the structural elements below the skin. For example, a patient complains that the deep hollows under the eyes make her look older than she is. She has done her research and books an appointment to get a filler injected into the hollows. Sounds like the ideal situation. However, using the Diamond Contour technique, I educate her that it is not the hollows under her eyes that make her look aged and tired. Rather, it is the combination of the hollows on the temples due to fat loss, lowered cheekbones due to bone loss, and the droop of the eyelids. To just inject filler into the hollows under the eyes without addressing all the symptoms as a whole would create a very unbalanced, un-natural appearance.

The skin on my heels won’t stop cracking and peeling. It’s really annoying and painful when I walk—not to mention ugly when I try to wear sandals. Anything I can do to get rid of this?

Cracked heels are very common. They are cause by thickened dry skin. Pressure on the heel causes the bottom of the heel to stretch out, which causes splits or fissures in the skin. If untreated, cracks in your skin are painful.

1. Try to avoid standing for long periods of time.

2. Wear footwear that has back support, and avoid open back shoes.

3. See a dermatologist if you have eczema, psoriasis, or dry skin, These conditions can cause cracked skin in your heel.

4. Moisturize the skin frequently. Use products with lactic acid (Amlactin or Lachydrin) or creams with urea, which will thin the thick calloused skin on your heel.

5. See a dermatologist to remove the thickened skin. Skin splits and fissures will heal faster if the thick skin is removed. You should never use a razor or scissors to reduce a callous yourself. You may take off too much skin, which will cause pain or an infection.

6. Consider a heel cup worn in your shoe, which will keep your heel from expanding sideways, and reduce the chance of heel fissures.

My legs, arms and stomach get tan in the summer, but my face always gets white blotches. My aunt said it’s a fungus that’s covering up my skin from getting tan. Is this true?

White spots on the skin are more noticeable during the summer, since these areas don’t tan. There are many conditions that can cause white spots and patches. Fungus is just one of them.

Other conditions that cause white spots on the skin include

1. Vitiligo, where parts of the skin lose their pigment. The cause is unknown. Vitiligo appears as flat white spots, anywhere on the body.

2. Pityriasis Alba is a common condition that affects children and teens. It appears as dry white patches, like a powdery thumbprint on the face or upper body. It usually resolves by itself.

3. Tinea Versicoler, caused by a fungus, that usually occurs on the upper trunk and shoulders. It is most noticeable in the summer, when you have a tan. See your dematologist for prescription treatment.

4. Psoriasis and eczema starts with red patches that can leave lighter skin as it heals. Most of the time, the color returns to normal.

5. Recurrent tanning by the sun or tanning booths can also cause the skin to develop uneven pigmentation and white spots.

The first areas that show signs of aging on our face is our eyes and mouth. We all know how to prevent wrinkles around our eyes (Botox), but everyone thinks the way to fix the loss of collagen in the lips is to blow them up with filler. What you need to know is that the ridge along our lip line loses collagen first. Look at your profile, and look at the upper tip of your lip. It should look like a little ski-slope. As we age, this ski slope gradually flattens, causing lips to appear thinner, and allows wrinkles to form along our mouth [i.e. smoker’s lines]. The best way to create fuller, more youthful lips is to inject a filler along the lip contour to recreate this ridge. I then balance the proportion of the ridge with the fullness of the actual lips, and inject the actual meat of the lips appropriately. I prefer Juvederm Ultra Plus XC for this technique because the cross-linked Hyaluronic Acid is very smooth and malleable.

Pros

– helps refine skin texture to lessen the appearance of fine lines

- prescription strengths of retinol (i.e. Retin-A) can help mild to moderate acne

- it is a mild exfoliant, so it helps remove mild hyperpigmentation with continued use

Cons

- causes skin to become sensitive to sunlight, so people who spend a lot of time outdoors should avoid using retinol

- causes skin irritation, burning, stinging, dryness, and flaky skin

- an “old-fashioned” anti-aging remedy; there are so many newer, advanced peptides and botanical extracts that can produce even better results without any of the side effects of retinol.

What to avoid:

You want to avoid waxing on skin that is being treated with retinol because it will be too irritating, and may burn and scar the skin. Retinol, especially at the higher concentrations, will irritate the skin and cause redness, dryness and peeling. It also causes the skin to become more sensitive to sunlight, which means your skin may become red, burn and/or develop brown spots more easily when exposed to sunlight. Pouring hot wax on skin that is already dried, burned and irritated, AND ripping it off, is just asking for trouble.

New study reported that people who eat a lot of processed meat such as ham, bacon, sausages and burgers run a greater risk of premature death and developing conditions such as cancer and heart disease.

The study involved 448,568 people in 10 European countries, including the United Kingdom. Researchers found that the biggest consumers of processed meat were 44% more likely to die prematurely from any cause than those who ate little of it. High levels of consumption increased the risk of death from heart disease by 72% and cancer by 11%.

If everyone ate no more than 20g a day of processed meat – about one piece of bacon, sausage or thin slice of ham – then 3% of all premature deaths could be avoided, according to an estimate by the authors, led by Professor Sabine Rohrmann from the University of Zurich. The full study results are published in the medical journal BMC Medicine.

But the study also found that a small amount of red meat also seems to benefit health because it contains important nutrients and minerals. The risk rise in line with the level of consumption. Dr Rachel Thompson, deputy head of science at the World Cancer Research Fund, said the research bore out its own findings in 2007 – disputed by the meat industry at the time – about the health risks of processed meat.It has found that consuming bacon, ham, hot dogs, salami and some sausages heightened the risk of bowel cancer. The charity estimates that 4,100 fewer Britons a year would be diagnosed with the disease if everyone ate no more than 10g of processed meat a day, though advises avoiding it altogether.

Dr Carrie Ruxton, a nutritionist who sits on the meat industry-funded Meat Advisory Panel, said the study’s findings were not robust enough to justify changing public health advice. The fact those who consumed the largest amounts of processed meat also displayed other unhealthy habits meant it was hard to confidently ascribe risk of death to meat eating alone, she said.

In summary, the occasional piece of bacon and ham with breakfast isn’t going to kill you. But we do know that processed meats have a higher salt and fat content. Eat processed meats in moderation, and try to switch to fresh, lean red meats instead. Mix it up by eating a more varied diet that includes fish, vegetables and legumes for a healthier lifestyle.
