The Hollywood Microdose

There is a new phrase making its way through dermatology offices and beauty conversations alike. It is called the “Hollywood Microdose,” and it refers to a low dose approach to Accutane that is gaining attention for its ability to improve acne, oil production, and overall skin quality.

While Accutane, also known as oral isotretinoin, has long been considered the gold standard for treating severe acne, dermatologists are now seeing growing interest in lower dose regimens that can be used over a longer period of time.

“Normally Accutane is prescribed as about 1 mg per kilogram of body weight, which can be around 80 mg per day for someone who weighs about 175 pounds. A typical treatment course lasts about six months,” explains Dr. Kaplan.

Low dose Accutane works differently.

“Low dose Accutane, also called micro dosing or Hollywood dosing, is becoming more popular. These regimens can vary from 10 to 40 mg taken one to three times per week. Treatment can last from six months to eighteen months or longer,” says Dr. Kaplan.

Patients are essentially taking smaller amounts of the medication, less often, but for a longer period of time compared to traditional high dose regimens.

The Skin Benefits Beyond Acne

While Accutane is widely known as an acne treatment, patients and dermatologists are noticing additional benefits when it is used at lower doses.

“Low dose Accutane may have anti-aging benefits. Some studies show that itincreases collagen production and reduces fine lines and wrinkles,” says Dr. Kaplan.

Many patients also notice improvements in skin texture and oil production.

“My patients often see smaller looking pores and smoother skin texture. As we get older, rosacea and enlarged oil glands become more common. Low dose Accutane treats both,” he explains.

The result is skin that often appears smoother, more refined, and less oily.

Supporting Your Skin While on Accutane

Even when taken at lower doses, Accutane can leave the skin feeling dry, sensitive, or compromised. Supporting the skin barrier with the right skincare products becomes essential during treatment.

A gentle exfoliation step can help remove dull surface buildup without irritating the skin. The  Diamond Contour Supercharged 1 Minute Daily Facial is designed to smooth and refine the skin while supporting hydration and radiance. The formula exfoliates while helping the skin appear brighter and more even, which can be especially helpful for patients dealing with post acne texture.

Hydration is equally important. The  Diamond Contour Collagen Boosting Hydration Crèmehelps replenish moisture while supporting the skin’s natural collagen levels. As skin becomes drier during Accutane treatment, maintaining hydration helps the skin stay comfortable and resilient.

Why Hollywood Loves It

The nickname “Hollywood Microdose” is not accidental. The treatment has become especially popular among actors and on camera talent.

“Hollywood actresses and actors love low dose Accutane because it reduces the appearance of oil glands and eliminates oily looking skin,” says Dr. Kaplan.

Under bright lights and high definition cameras, excess oil can be particularly noticeable.

“No one wants to see a flash reflected on their forehead. Their skin looks tighter, with a smoother, matte appearance,” he explains.

For many patients, that refined, balanced look is exactly the goal.

Clearer skin, smaller looking pores, less shine and a smoother, more polished complexion that still looks completely natural.
