Dr. Kaplan is often asked by patients and the media , “Are toners necessary?” Here is his response:

“It’s important to understand that your skin’s optimal pH is about 5.5, which is slightly acidic. In order for cleansers to work effectively to remove oil and impurities from the skin, they must be slightly alkaline. As a result, after your wash your face, the skin is off balance. By using a good quality toner after cleansing, it helps re-balance your skin back to an optimal pH. Just avoid using toners with alcohol, because I believe these are too harsh and irritating for the skin.

Why is optimal skin pH important? Because when skin is too acidic, your sebaceous glands will overcompensate, causing an oily, greasy complexion. This then leads to skin blemishes and acne breakouts. And when skin is too alkaline, it will feel very dry and tight, and be very sensitive. This leads to a very dull, lackluster complexion.

Using an effective toner is a critical step in a proper skincare regimen. By balancing skin pH, good quality toners essentially allows your skin to properly receive all the nutrients from your treatment products, such as serums and moisturizers. An example I give my patients, imagine your skin is like a brand new sponge. A brand new sponge is usually very dry and compact when it comes out of its package. If you try wiping up water with a dry sponge, it does not pick up liquid very well. But if you dampen the sponge first, it expands the sponge and allows you to pick up a lot of liquid. By spending a little time on cleansing and toning your skin properly, you allow your serums and moisturizers to work much more effectively.” - Stuart H. Kaplan, M.D.
